Youth Academy.

Youth Academy is a fun, active programme for Kiwi kids aged 8 – 12 years to come together, be challenged, be supported, to fail, learn and achieve, all while being active and having fun in a safe environment.

Our Athlete Development team has been providing age and stage appropriate strength and conditioning sessions for youth athletes for over a decade. In that time, we’ve seen our athletes grow as people, developing resilience and confidence, and learning to work together to solve movement challenges.

Youth Academy uses movement and activity as the vehicle towards holistic personal development for Kiwi kids. Under the watchful eye of qualified youth coaches, children will work individually and in groups, developing key psychosocial skills, autonomy and learning the value of experimentation.

Meet James – Youth Academy coach

Qualifications: Currently completing a Master of Sports and Exercise focusing on change of direction and speed. Graduated from AUT with a Bachelor of Sport and Recreation, majoring in biomechanics in 2018.

Coaching experience: James been with AD since January 2019, previously worked in youth strength and conditioning and adolescent development at Tauranga Boys’ College.

James’ sporting background is extensive and varied, having dabbled in everything from soccer, touch and sevens rugby to boxing and powerlifting. This range of sports has given him a great understanding of different movement fundamentals and coordination.

For James, the most important aspect of Youth Academy sessions will be the holistic value for each child. While sessions will be based around exploration of movement through play, the self-esteem and personal development benefits will serve young people in all facets of their life as they mature.

When he’s not coaching or training himself, James is usually either working hard on his masters research, getting social with his mates, or generally making the most of each day.
