JOINING OUR SWIM SCHOOL
How do I enrol?
To enrol, please contact the Swim School team via email, phone or on our website. Please note that to secure your spot in a class, we do require the first two weeks of payment to be made, and your direct debit details to be on file for future automatic payments.
What should I bring to my child’s first lesson?
Please bring along suitable togs, goggles and a cap, all of which you can purchase here at AUT Millennium. Babies do not need to wear goggles and a cap for their lessons. Water babies and toddlers are required to wear swimming nappies, and these are available for purchase at our Main Reception.
We do not allow rash tops or beach shorts for lessons. These are great for the beach, but they create a drag which makes learning to swim difficult.
We also recommend you bring warm clothing and a beanie in the cooler months to keep children warm after lessons during the colder months.
I’m an adult learner – what do I need to know?
We have evening adult classes with three levels – beginner, learner and breather. Please bring along a swim cap, towel and goggles, and something warm to change into after your lesson. Please do not wear a rash shirt as this makes learning to swim more difficult.
We offer a free assessment lesson if you are not sure which level would suit you. If you are a competent swimmer but would like to focus on technique or fitness, we recommend our Adult Swim Squad, which has lunchtime and evening sessions.

LESSON INFORMATION
What is the ratio of teachers to children in your classes?

• Preschool 1:4
• School Age 1:4 to 1:5
• Squads 1:6 to 1:8
• Morning Fitness Squad 1:16
• Afternoon/Weekend Fitness Squad 1:16

How do I get my child’s swimming assessed?
We assess all of our swimmers at least twice a year to provide feedback and determine if they are ready to move up levels. Our supervisors and teachers also will assess students throughout the year if they believe they might be ready to move up. If you would like your child to be assessed, please chat to the Supervisor on pool deck.
Do you focus on distance or technique?
Our focus is on technique, and the distance will come. We focus on all four strokes – freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. We also teach tumble turns, underwater starts and other aspects of competitive swimming.
Why isn’t my child improving quickly?
Learning to swim takes time – practice, persistence and patience. This is why we recommend starting the learning to swim journey as early as possible. Attendance and consistency is key. Please ensure you attend all the lessons and make learning to swim a priority in your child’s education.
Children have different ways of interpreting information, and we all have different physical capabilities. Because of this, try not to compare your child to any other children. If you would like to support their swimming progress, take them for a swim in between lessons, and take part in our holiday intensive lessons.

There is a non-refundable two-week commitment period with each fortnightly direct debit, so please be sure to let us know as soon as you are wanting to cancel, and we will let you know when your last class/payment will be.
Cancellation forms are available from the reception desk or alternatively you can email [email protected]
When should my child stop swimming?
Water Safety NZ recommends that if you or your child are going to be swimming at the beach, river or lake or doing any aquatic activity on the water, the minimum survival distance is 200 metres of continuous swimming. If you or your child are not able to maintain this distance, swimming lessons and or regular swimming should be part of your routine. There’s also excellent health benefits, and swimming can be a great way to maintain fitness levels and cross-train for other sports. We have fitness squads for advanced swimmers to maintain their fitness and technique.
